I haven t actually read that book because I feared I just couldn t take it - just as I feared I couldn t take Alice Sebold s best-selling, soon-to-be-movie The Lovely Bones (narrated by a dead girl who was raped and murdered) and Wally Lamb s Oprah-picked, best-selling She s Come Undone (narrated by a hugely obese, compulsive eater). The question for me was, and still is: Why have so many novels materialized that are told from the point of view of one who is abnormal in some striking way. (Boston Globe)
