The Great Macaulay Nov 13, 2009
And give them Macaulay does, on subjects as diverse as Juvenal, Thucydides, Suetonius, Herodotus, Demosthenes, the 17th-century Scottish Royalist general Montrose, and the correct translation of the Greek term philokerdes. One might wonder what the polymathic Macaulay did when not reading or writing. (The American Conservative)
Fame: From the bronze age to Britney Oct 31, 2009
Clearly Payne isn't interested in fame to excess -- he would hardly have made it through Homer, Thucydides, Plutarch etc if he were. But plenty today are excessively in thrall to fame and the famous, and that surely is the rub. (The Age, Australia)
Did Thucydides Really Tell the Truth? Oct 20, 2009
Donald Kagan's Thucydides: The Reinvention of History ... Did Thucydides Really Tell the Truth ... Ancient readers were also shocked when they learned this story from the same source: Thucydides, the exiled general who recorded the atrocity, and the dialogue that preceded it, in an account that is in many ways the model for all subsequent western histories of high politics and war. Lionel Casson, 94, scholar on ancient maritime history Jul 26, 2009
Drawing from an array of sources - the writings of the historian Thucydides and the speeches of Demosthenes; cargo manifests kept by unknown captains; images of ships on sculptures; the dating and typing of timbers taken from sunken vessels - Dr. Casson s gracefully written books traced the trade routes that bound the ancient world and described the early evolution of shipbuilding and naval warfare. Realist Solutions for Israel-Palest... May 7, 2009
As Thucydides illustrates in The History of the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians, a prime example of realist actors, seized Melos despite the Melians desire for neutrality and being friends of [the Athenians] and enemies of neither side. When a state holds superiority it is the natural balance of power to control the inferior (Thucydides). (Suite101.com)

View Point: A collision at sea Feb 20, 2009
A ship I once served in had a small brass plate on the bridge with a quotation from Thucydides, the Greek statesman, historian and seaman of the fourth century BC: "A collision at sea can ruin your whole day." It is still true. It is harder to collide at sea than on land, since there are no blind curves and nothing moves much faster than a bicycle, so my normal reaction to a collision at sea is to think "How can they have been so stupid?" But here is a collision that beggars the imagination. (Jakarta Post, Indonesia -- Editorial)
