A Nation of Drivers Jun 16, 2009
In American movies, in Preston Sturges, in Frank Capra, the crowds whizz past in their comfortable clothes, and each person might be thinking their own thoughts, before one of them, Claudette Colbert or Jimmy Stewart, steps out. And if they seem wildly capable of being themselves, that capability is crowned by the ease with which they move themselves around, sovereign in their cars. (The American Conservative)
"The Hangover" Jun 5, 2009
I have a sister who has watched Preston Sturges' brilliant "Miracle at Morgan's Creek" exactly once, and although she likes it, she has vowed never to watch it again -- it makes her feel completely and utterly crazy. "The Hangover" doesn't have Sturges' genius, featherweight-knockout touch, but it does work on a principle that Sturges loved: It builds in us an increasingly squirrelly sense of anxiety, a mounting certainty that none of this is going to turn out OK. 'Thousands of Broadways,' 'Perforated Heart,' 'Blue Hour' reviewed May 31, 2009
Interspersed with his recollections are deft analyses of fictional small-town portrayals that expose the smug alongside the snug, from William Faulkner and Mark Twain (who applies "a soft, hand-rubbed sheen of misgiving" to the stereotypical setting) to Preston Sturges and Alfred Hitchcock. One wonders how long it will take some enterprising magazine editor to round up the cast of the short-lived but beloved high-school television drama Freaks and Geeks a show starring James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini and Lizzy Caplan, among many, many others, and co-created by this generation's Preston Sturges, Judd Apatow. I give it five years, maximum. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)
Isla Fisher shines in dressed-up screwball comedy ''Confessions of a Shopaholic' Feb 13, 2009
Since the movie seems like such an extra-chaotic episode of "Ugly Betty," I'm reluctant to mention George Cukor, Preston Sturges, or even Frank Capra, but at the very least Hogan, whose movies are girlier and gayer, has snacked on the pace of their work as well any number of Technicolor romantic musicals from the 1950s. That's the one thing not in this movie: a production number - although some of Patricia Field's tackier costumes certainly sing. (Boston Globe)
