Literary honour? Nov 20, 2009
Roth can comfort himself with the fact that a roll-call of literary fiction's great and good - from the Booker winner John Banville to the acclaimed Israeli novelist Amos Oz, the Goncourt winner Jonathan Littell and the Whitbread winner Paul Theroux - have made it into the line-up this year. Auberon Waugh set up the award to ''draw attention to the crude, tasteless, often perfunctory use of redundant passages of sexual description in the modern novel, and to discourage it. Mad about Medford Oct 15, 2009
The killer quote is not from Bloomberg, presumably because he was too shrewd to say anything as crass, but from another Medford native, Paul Theroux, the writer, who was a year ahead of Bloomberg at Medford High ... Comfort In The Great Railway Bazaar Paul Theroux writes "better to go first class than arrive ... " He is referring to trains but could have been writing about first class on this flight because the time I spend in the suite isn't enough. Why would you want to leave when you have food and drink on demand, so many new-release movies that it's like being at a film festival and a lie-flat seat that is made into a bed with cotton-lined blankets and down pillows when you want.
