19 September 2006 Ambassador of Conscience Award: Amnesty Internationals most prestigious honour, the Ambassador of Conscience Award, was present to Mandela by South African writer and Nobel laureate, Nadine Gordimer, at his home in Johannesburg. More than 150 writers and rights activists, including Salman Rushdie, Nadine Gordimer and Wole Soyinka, have signed an open letter to President Hu Jintao urging Liu's release. Marlborough couple honored as "Darfur Heroes" Feb 9, 2009
With no outside backing and no connections, the Marlborough couple compiled an anthology of essays called "Dedicated to the People of Darfur: Writings on Fear, Risk and Hope." They encouraged 40 noted authors to contribute the essays, including Pulitzer Prize winners Frank McCourt, Jane Smiley and James McPherson and Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer.
