He died in 1894 and is buried on a hilltop on the island of Upolu; a US Navy historian, James A. Michener, drank at Aggie Grey's bar in Apia during the Second World War and used the barkeeper as model for Bloody Mary, a Tonkinese character in his 1947 collection of short stories, Tales of the South Pacific.
