There were no candles for Tosca to place beside Scarpia's body, and, as far as I could make out, no stars to inspire Cavaradossi at the start of Act III. The Act I Te Deum that confluence of religiosity and Scarpia's lustfulness was a moody tableau in which the chorus, dwarfed by Richard Peduzzi's unforgivingly stark arched-brickwork set (a church designed, it seems, by Giorgio de Chirico), advanced imperceptibly from upstage as one block of humanity rather than separate souls.
