Gifford Pinchot, Bull Moose Progressive, friend and colleague of Teddy Roosevelt and the first chief of the Forest Service, had this motto to guide his management of the national forests; the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run. I don t believe Chief Pinchot was thinking of the Canadians, their investors and China when he established this principle. (Green Valley News & Sun, AZ)

Throughout its 142 years as an active prison, Eastern State housed a number of noted inmates including the infamous Al Capone, bank robber "Slick" Willie Sutton and "Pep the Dog." Legend has it that Pep was sentenced to prison in 1924 by Gov. Gifford Pinchot for killing his wife's cat. The striped bass population of San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River has already dropped to a 1/3 of what it was a few years ago, at least in part due to water diversions and habitat destruction.
