News and Articles on Conrad Aiken
‘American Fantastic Tales’ collects best stuff that bad dreams are made of Oct 18, 2009 Madness, addiction, and suicide crop up; murder too: Poet and novelist, Conrad Aiken, for instance, found the bodies of his parents after his father had shot his wife and himself. Aiken s tale, present in the first volume, Mr. Arcularis, is an excellent little nerve-wracker set on an ocean liner - or it would seem to be. (Boston Globe)
Another View: Americans were what they ate Jun 1, 2009 One, the Federal Writers Project, operated in all 48 states and employed more than 4,500 writers, including Studs Terkel, Saul Bellow, Richard Wright, Nelson Algren, Claude McKay, Conrad Aiken, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston, Kenneth Patchen, John Cheever and Kenneth Rexroth. By February 1943, when the WPA was closed down, these writers had published 1 million words about America. (Hanford Sentinal, CA)
Liberia: William R. Tolbert - 'In The Pantheon Of Great African Leaders' May 29, 2009 Another writer, Conrad Aiken, said more briefly. "How shall we praise the magnificence of the dead; the great man humbled the haughty brought to dust?" May 13, 2009 marks what would have been the 96th birth anniversary of Liberia's 19th President and my uncle, the late Dr. William Richard Tolbert, Jr. and I am indeed honored to be able to say a few words on this occasion in his memory. Silent Snow, Secret Snow Feb 11, 2009 Silent Snow, Secret Snow was written by American novelist and poet Conrad Aiken 75 years ago and is considered Aiken's most well-known short. It was the right play at the right time for the right author; Aiken himself dealt with personal struggle - at age 11 he found his parents dead in a murder-suicide - that may have led him to write about dark subjects.
