Some of the nation's best writers, including and Ann Patchett, offer mostly touching short essays about important dogs in their lives or other people's lives. The editors of The Bark, the excellent glossy magazine, pulled this collection together in 2003, and later did a second collection Howl billed as "contemporary dog wit" but which, in my opinion, lacks the soulfulness of the first. When Ann Patchett visited Dowagiac in May, she told Union High School students she wrote "The Patron Saint of Liars" from different points of view while she tried to figure out how to write a novel. In between my usual work-related fare and my new addiction to Buddhist texts (hardly summer reading), this novel was an absolute pleasure, a page-turner that transported me into another world populated by unexpected characters - a motley crew, from South American guerrilla terrorists to Japanese millionaires - stuck in a seemingly impossible situation.
