    Probably back in Ancient Greece, when such forms of audience participation were encouraged - leading the playwright Aeschylus to complain "Everybody's a critic!" But if the Greeks had a word for it, it wasn't "booing", which dates from the 18th century and is one of those lovely imitative words in the English language that reflects the sound it represents.
